You may have not noticed, but it is already June, which means we are now well into 2014. If I think about 2013, the songs that were the songs of the year (Blurred Lines, Get Lucky, We Can’t Stop) were really summer anthems. Sufficed to say, who knows what the next few months will bring, but the songs we fall in love with over the next three months may be the ones we longingly and nostalgically recall years down the line as the sound of 2014 and its World Cup. But, before we allow our collective aural memories attach themselves to what has not yet arrived, here are 5 tracks you should certainly listen to.
Le Youth feat. Dominique Young Unique – Dance with Me ft. Dominique Young Unique
90’s nostaligia isn’t quite dead yet and thank god. I cannot get enough of LE YOUTH. His other “well-known” track, C O O L, is really my recommendation but that is 2013 track so this 2014 track is basically just as good. We get a throw back TLC remix/reinterpretation of No Scrubs/No Doves…wasn’t that the name of the male response to the TLC hit? Anyway, the song is catchy and dancey as fudge. Everything about this guy feels very C O O L and I hope he is around for years to come.
Skrillex – Ease My Mind with Niki & The Dove
At this point, the Skrillex secret is out. He is now up there with David Guetta and Calvin Harris in the pop music crossover pantheon. However, this sampling from Niki & The Dove (a delicious group in their own right) is just so tasty. “Niki’s” vocals are just so magnetic and her voice will get stuck in your head [I don’t know if Niki is the name of the singer #awkward]. Good luck not trying to sing along every time you hit the 3:00 mark after you hear the song a few times. It is not to hard to find the more experimental original version by the group which is great (it is also currently on “31 Days by Andrew Larsson”, but the Skrillex take on the song is singable and danceable. Just let your foot do the tapping.
Young & Sick – Twentysomething
Thanks to my friend, the House of Carbs creator, for turning me onto this one. The vocals are smooth, but what really grabs you in a very addictive way is the instrumentation. Whatever machinery/keyboard wizardry is being used, it just feels good to sing in your head over and over again. This is also one of those songs that the first time you hear it, you think you have heard it before.
Deorro – Five Hours
It is literally impossible to choose one 2014 Deorro track to recommend. I will admit I do not much about this outfit, but everything coming out with the name Deorro on it is incredible. Let’s put it this way – if you were to craft a night of incredible dancing, the most clichéd amazing night you would ever want, with free entrance into the club, skipping the lines, VIP bottle service, everything on the house, incredibly beautiful and well-dressed people, and hundreds of revelers dancing their booties off on the dancefloor, Deorro is the music you would want as the soundtrack of that night. This song was the first I heard, but since finding it, have fallen in love with the rest.
DJ Snake & Lil Jon – Turn Down for What
Admittedly, this one is already a massive hit, so you probably have heard of it by now. I also think this one is the leader in the early running for Song of the Summer song. Beyond the awesomeness of it, I love the message of the song. There is nothing Lil Jon and the party around his life will turn down the music for. Is anyone asking? Doubtful, because it’s Lil Jon.
